Brandt & Board. Pre-owned luxury made accessible, authenticated and guaranteed.

It started because I couldn't find a set worth keeping.

I'd played chess since I was twelve. By 2011 I'd owned four or five sets — all of them either too light to feel right, or made somewhere unspecified from something unspecified, or both. A colleague brought a set to a weekend gathering that year: solid walnut board, weighted pieces, turned by hand. I asked where he'd got it. He shrugged and said a retired joiner had made it for him. That was the moment.

We began in a workshop with two benches and a small lathe. There are now five of us — two on the turning floor, one doing the finishing and weighting, one handling the boards and inlay, and me managing the lot. We build between forty and sixty sets a year. That's not a lot. It's exactly as many as we can build properly.

Every piece is turned from seasoned hardwood — European walnut, English boxwood, ebonised pear. We weight the bases by hand, felt the bottoms ourselves, and inspect each set against a reference piece before it ships. The board joinery is done in-house. We don't buy in pre-cut squares and assemble them.

What we don't do: we don't rush commissions to hit a calendar date, we don't substitute materials without telling you, and we don't sell sets we wouldn't keep ourselves.

Join a community of collectors and players who've trusted handmade work over catalogue convenience — men who know the difference between a set that was made and a set that was manufactured. That distinction still matters here.

Before you order

Questions we hear from serious buyers.

Materials, lead times, commissions, care. Answered plainly, without the brochure.

01 What wood do you use and where does it come from?

Depends on the set. The Walnut & Maple Staunton uses American black walnut and hard maple — both kiln-dried, both sourced from certified European timber merchants we've worked with for years. The Ebony & Boxwood pieces use Gaboon ebony and Sri Lankan boxwood. The Rosewood Travel Set uses Indian sheesham. Every board is finished with food-safe oil, no lacquer.

02 Are the pieces tournament-standard or just decorative?

Both, depending on which set. The Sheesham Club Set and the Walnut & Maple Staunton are made to FIDE weight and proportion standards — king height 95mm, weighted and felted. You can play a serious game. The Olive Wood Natural Pieces are cut from a single olive tree and vary slightly piece to piece. They play fine but they're not for a clock match.

03 How long does delivery take, and do you ship outside Germany?

Within Germany, three to five working days. EU-wide, allow seven to ten. We ship to the UK, Switzerland and Norway too — customs charges there are the buyer's responsibility, and we declare full value on every parcel. Every order goes out with tracking and is insured to purchase value. Fragile pieces like boards are double-boxed.

04 Can I return a set if it isn't what I expected?

Yes, within 14 days of delivery, provided the set hasn't been played with and comes back in its original packaging. Send us a message through the Contacts page first. We'll arrange a pre-paid return label for German addresses. EU and international buyers cover return postage. Refund goes back to your original payment method within five working days of the piece arriving back.

05 Do the boards come with pieces included, or sold separately?

The Oak & Wenge Board 55mm is sold on its own — it's a playing surface, not a set. The Walnut & Maple Staunton Set and Sheesham Club Set come as complete sets, board and pieces together. The Ebony & Boxwood Pieces and Olive Wood Natural Pieces are sold as pieces only. Mix and match is the point — a lot of customers pair the ebony pieces with the oak and wenge board.

06 What if a piece gets damaged or lost — can I buy a replacement?

Usually, yes. We keep spare stock for most of our piece sets. If you lose a bishop from your Walnut & Maple set, contact us with the set name and we'll match it from the same batch where possible. Colour and grain won't be identical — that's the nature of wood — but the weight and dimensions will match. We don't charge a premium for individual replacement pieces.

07 How do I care for a wooden board and pieces over time?

Once or twice a year, wipe the board down with a barely-damp cloth and apply a thin coat of beeswax or EU oil. Let it soak in overnight. Don't leave a board in direct sunlight or near a radiator — that's how you get splits. The pieces are finished and don't need much beyond dusting. Felt bases can be replaced if they wear; we sell a small sheet of self-adhesive felt on request.

08 Is the Rosewood Travel Set small enough for actual travel?

It fits in a carry-on bag without trouble. The board folds in half and latches closed with the pieces stored inside — total closed dimensions are roughly 22 × 11 × 4 cm, weight around 600g. The pieces are smaller than a full club set, king height 72mm, but they're weighted and felted. Honest answer: it's a proper set, not a novelty.

★★★★★

"Ordered the walnut and ebony board with the Staunton set. The pieces arrived wrapped individually in cloth — not bubble wrap, cloth. The king stands 95mm, weighted just right, and the felt base on each piece is cut flush. I've bought three sets over the years from various makers. This is the one that stays on the table."

"The craftsmanship on the board is exactly what the photographs suggest — the grain matching on the border squares is careful work, not an accident. My one note: the delivery estimate said eight days and it was twelve. The set itself is faultless, so I won't hold it against them, but worth knowing if you're buying as a gift with a deadline."

"I play correspondence chess and use the board daily. Six months in, no warping, no movement in the inlay. The squares are 55mm — correct for the piece height — and the board sits flat without a cloth underneath. Good geometry, honest materials. That's all I ask."

"Bought the rosewood set as a retirement gift for my father-in-law, who played tournament chess in the seventies. He noticed immediately that the knight carving follows the traditional Jaques profile rather than the modern simplified version. I didn't know that. He did. He was pleased."

"The pieces are well-made and the weighting is good — heavier than I expected, which I like. The board, though, had a faint machine mark along one edge that I didn't spot in the photographs. Not structural, but visible under raking light. I emailed and they offered a replacement board. I kept the original because the mark is on the underside when stored. Would order again but examine the photos carefully."

"Acquired a complete set to complement a mid-century games table I restored. The proportions are right for the period — nothing oversized or theatrical. The box is dovetailed, not stapled. Small detail. Tells you something about how the rest of it was made."

Is this for you?

You buy serial numbers. Not status symbols.

01

You know the difference between a 16610 and a 116610 — and why one is worth twice the other.

02

You read the dossier before the price: caliber, service history, box and papers, original bracelet.

03

You'd rather wait two years for the right unworn piece than settle for a tired example today.

04

You want the watchmaker's verdict — not a sales script and not a polished Instagram pitch.

Built for men aged 35-65+ — established working professionals, craftsmen, and longtime collectors.
